How to tell what is wrong with your computer

Page: 1  2

If you are able to resume normal operation of your computer, then you can try some of the following to isolate the cause of the problem or crash:

1. Try running the offending program again. Does it hang up again when starting, or after using it for a while? Note what you were doing to re-trigger the crash. Write down anything you deem relevant. If the computer slows down noticeably while running the program, but hasn't crashed yet, you might be low on RAM, either because you don't have enough of it, or you have too many programs open (or windows). Try closing some other windows, while running the program that crashed earlier. Does the pc begin to run smoother and faster again? Or does it seem the same still. Note these differences. Chances are it's either a software conflict of some sort or an insufficient memory (RAM) issue.

2. If the same (or very similar) crash occurs while running a different program, then the problem is something that is in common to both programs. For example, maybe the error arises because you are trying to print to your printer, which could mean that you have a bad printer installation or driver file. They do get corrupted sometimes, especially if you use older printers whose driver files were designed prior to your current operating system's release date. If so, you may be able to remedy the problem just by going to your printer manufacturer's website and downloading the most up to date drivers. Also, viruses and spyware/adware can cause this sort of thing to happen, where various different programs on your pc become unstable.

3. If you experience a multitude of random problems that don't seem to have much in common, but are occurring fairly frequently, then there is a very good chance you have spyware, ad-ware, worms, or a virus in your computer. Many of these are difficult to remove, but you can try using some of the freeware programs out there to see if you can zap the offending software yourself. If you continue experiencing problems though, you may want to consider getting professional help to reduce wasted time and/or money. Remember, your time is worth money too. If it takes you six hours to fix something that a pro can do for you in one hour, then it is worth spending money on because you get the other five hours to yourself!
